Transformers Trailer:

The Transformers Trailer was the closest to my idea as it contains giant robots trying to take over the earth, much like the clones in my movie.

Target audience: Male 10-30

The trailer targets its audience with fast montages, scenes of tanks flipping , giant robots, guns, explosions and action scenes. This entertains and excites the audience whilst also setting up the conventions of the action adventure genre and the sci-fi sub genre. It also satisfies the diversion need of the four uses and gratifications as it contains another world which the viewer can escape into.

The popular toy franchise the movie is based on will also gain fans who played with them or still play with them, and the trailer achieves this by staying true to the already familiar brand. This could also bring about nostalgia.

Finally the two main characters bring about audience interest, especially the relationship between Shia LaBeouf and Megan Fox as it is quite aspirational that Shia LaBeouf's loser ends up with the beautiful Megan Fox and this appeals to the audience. This also fulfils the personal identity need.

Harry Potter Marketing Campaign

Posters:
Harry Potter is already a massive franchise and so much of this marketing campaign focuses on the epicness and scale of the final chapter and exploits the large following for the series by labelling it as "the biggest movie of a generation" and using dramtic imagery to highlight how everything changes and the stakes are much higher in this film. The emphasis is definately on dramticness.

This first teaser poster is very dramatic and really sets up the dark and epic tone of both movies. It also destroys the safe haven of Hogwarts in a striking image of it on fire and this is only the first poster. This leaves the audience wanting to find out more.

Many more posters were realeased further setting up the dramtic stakes depicting the main charcters on the run and the villians hunting them with taglines such as "nowhere is safe" and  "the hunt begins." This builds on the sense of a climax and excites the audience further. These posters are displayed in cinemas on the side of buses and at bus stops as well as online.

Trailers:
The trailers were released a few months before Part 1's release. The first trailer for both parts was shown at the MTV moive awards, which would have reached a good audience as obviously film fans would be watching the ceremony.
The trailers showed many clips from the movie focusing on the main plotline of Harry running from Voldermort using techniques such as swooping panning shots to show the scale of the different locations and voiceovers by the characters such as "the longer we stay here, the sooner he'll find us." There is also drama and romance in the trailer plus lots of conflict and binary opposites, the big one being good vs evil. It also introduces us to characters, new,old and returning.
The mood set by the taglines such as "Part 1 of The Epic Finale really builds up the excitement as well as the reminders that it will be shown in Imax.
The popularity of the films ensured there were many parodies of the trailer as well which also generated free publicity for the film

Website:
The website uses the main poster in the background and has many ways or the audience to interact with the motorbike chase game, the iphone app and the option to join the inal battle on Facebook.
It also links to Amazon and sites where you can buy mercahndise such as the DVD and video game. This is an example of synergy.

Some of the merchandise:

Publicity and Promotion:
The film also had a lot of promotion such as the premiere and the its apperance at the Comic-Con convention and also a lot of media publicity like the media attention as to where the book would split, the withdrawal fo 3D by the studio which was praised as the studio wern't going to put out a dodgy version for more money and the recapping of the series by many magazines and newspapers.

My Opinion:
I think this was a very succesful marketing campaign which used the popularity of the film and appetite for the final chapter to really rank up the tension. It also used a lot of synergy and cross-media propmotion e.g shorter versions of the trailer on TV and the main poster as the background to the website.

Mood Board for Men and Women in action adventure movies

This is my mood board. I learnt that generally there are a lot of similarities between women and men in action adventure movies. However men are often portrayed as muscly and brave while women are normally more reliant on brainpower and recourcefulness.

I also learnt that while searching through a magazine for images there are the film industry is saturated with male action heroes with hardly any female action heroes.

I also learnt that men and women are quite over sexualised in action adventure movies-men are big and muscly, women are portrayed as sexy and alluring e.g the sucker-punch photo in my mood board.
The clour code for my mood board is generally:
Girls side
Yellow-Unstereotypical
Orange-Stereotypical
Boys side
Yellow-Sterotypical
Orange-Unsterotypical
(based on the image not the character)

Monday, 28 February 2011

Cutting Down Details:

I could cut down on the detail for the exam in these ways:

I would not include some of the extra characters.

I would leave out the information about the rebel bases.

I would leave out the complications in the end battle.

Secondary Audience:

The secondary audience for my film would be female aged 15-25 because of the second hero being a strong feisty female lead and due to the drama and romance of the film.

Raine Zahn: (Hero No 2) Raine is a relatively new agent. She has been at the CIA for two years and is every bit as brave, strong and attractive as Sabre. Played by Natalie Portman.

Vibius:  (Helper) A member of California's main rebel camp, Vibius is a larger than life character who keeps his sense of humour throughout the film despite the dark times. The rebels look to him to keep their spirits up so he is an unconventional leader of sorts. He is also strong and brave and decides to leave the camp with Sabre and Raine as he seeks adventure. He provides comic relief. Played by Will Smith.

Presidents Clone: (Main Villian) The presidents clone is the main villian of the film as he has all the information the president has in his head of secret codes ect. He also takes charge of the clone attack. He is not so much of a fighter as a co-ordinater, pressing all the buttons behind the Presidents desk. This makes his evil lair The White House which is quite interesting as The White House is usually a force for good. Played by Danny Glover.

Movie Pitch Mark II (Edited Version)

Movie Pitch: Clones 2050

Genre: Sci-fi

Changes in Red: Equilibrium:In the year 2050 the worlds top scientists are reaching the end of a 10 year project to clone every single living person in the world. This means that if someone dies they can be brought back to life via their clone.

Disruption:As debate rages about whether this is natural or not, and a group of rebels (seen as outcasts) refuse to be cloned, an airborn alien substance infiltrates the factory and infects the transmitter for each and every clone in factories all over the world, reprogramming them. The clones awake now with the mindframes of the aliens and now wish to overthrow the human race clearing the way for an alien species (unseen) wishing to land on earth after ruining their own planet. Each clone is assigned to kill their equivalent human.

As humans all over the world are slaughtered by their much stronger clones. Raine Zahn (Natalie Portman) and Sabre Nolan (Hugh Jackman) (futuristic names) co-agents for the CIA in California manage to fight back and kill their clones. Opening them apart Raine and Sabre find chips in thier brains. They attach these to their bodies and are able to infiltrate a clone gathering undetected where they find out that for the clones to be destroyed the transmitter in New York needs to be destroyed.

The pair must travel across the country, not knowing who's a clone and who isn't and hoping the chip is enough to protect them. Of course it isn't and Raine and Sabre have many close encounters over the course of the journey. To protect themselves Sabre and Raine move from rebel camp to rebel camp (these places are safe because the rebels do not have clones) meeting some colourful characters along the way.) Throughout the film Raine and Sabre get closer and it is obvious they are falling in love.
Resoloution:
When they reach New York Sabre and Raine recruit the massive rebel camp there to rise up against the clone army protecting the factory.

During the showdown Sabre and Raine's rebooted clones come back to fight them. Raine is killed by her clone and in a cruel twist of fate the clone leaders ask Raine's clone to shoot Sabre, as they can tell he is in love with her. But the clone has inherited Raine's feelings and her love for Sabre is too strong so she cannot do it and instead helps him take down the rest of the clones and destroy the transmitter.  When the other clones die Raine does not because her strong feelings have broken her free from the tranmitter's influence.
Restoration
The transmitter is destroyed and the clones die. A damaged earth seeks to rebuild itself after the thousands of deaths but celebrations happen all around for the end of the crisis. The last scene is of Sabre and Raine Clone getting engagedin a romantic place (possibly Paris.)
Influences:
I, Robot
The Island
Spiderman 3

Narrative Techniques:
Suspense-The whole movie is suspensful and the characters are constantly on the run from danger built up by music
Red Herring-When Raine is killed by her clone, the audience think she will no longer have feelings for Sabre but are proved wrong
Binary Opposites-Good vs Evil, Male Hero vs Female Hero, Human vs Clone, Promises of Utopia by government (clones meant to help) vs Dystopia the situation creates, Rebel Camps vs Built up Futuristic World, The White House as a force for good vs White House as a force for bad.

BLK comments

Both homeworks very good; some effective analysis. Aim to be more explicit when identifying genre conventions, for example when writing about narrative, you need to identify specific action and events that are unique to the genre.

Great choice of clips, well done.

Action adventure clip: Car Chase, Quantum Of Solace

Quantum Of Solace is the 22nd film in the extremely succesful James Bond franchise. I will analyse the first few minutes of the video (before the opening credits.)

Narrative:

Equilibrium: Quantum Of Solace defies conventions as it does not start with an equilibrium. This is beacuse it a direct continuation of Casino Royale. It starts with an explosive action sequence which is explained later and gets straight into the stroyline.

Disruption: The storyline however does change direction when M's bodyguard turns out to be a double agent and attacks her allowing criminal Mr White to escape. James then chases the bodyguard across Sicily and this then leads him on a trail that takes him to Haiti, Austria and Bolivia where he uncovers a plot to take control of Bolivia's water system and create a monopoly.

Restoration: James stops the plot in a spectacular battle and Greene the main villain dies.

Iconography:
The Iconography is the clip is very important as James Bond is known for its cool gadgets and fast cars, and its weaponary mostly guns. The cars used are Aston Martin and Alfa Romeo, both extremely fast and smart cars. Machine guns are also used during the car chase. James costume, a suit and tie, is typically smart and suave, even during a high adrenalin car chase. The lighting is natural daylight but cloud covers the sun so the clip is not overly bright. The reason for this is that James Bind does not use shadowy or dark lighting as it is not mysterious, but a fully blown, in your face, unsubtle action movie.

Characters
The main character in this clip is obvioulsy the hero; James Bond. He is everything a hero should be. He is brave, fearless, strong and also seems unfazed by the chaos around him.
Other characters in the movie are
The Villian: Dominic Greene; has an evil plan and is hero's enemy.
The Princess/ Helper: Camille Montes; As well as being the princess and having romantic involvement with James, Camille helps James solves his mission and acts as his equally strong, brave sidekcik for much of the movie.
The Donor: Strawberry Fields; she helps James to infiltrate Greene's party.
The Princesse's Father: M; Although not literally in any way the princesses father, M is the wise older figure in the film.

Setting:
The film is set in a wide variety of locations across the globe which gives the film an epic scale and introduces plenty of exotic landscapes for different types of action sequeces to take place in. This gives the film an extra appeal as people will pay for the beautiful visuals and also gives the film a global appeal.

Johnny English Clip Analysis

Johnny English is a 2003 comedy film about a incompetent secret agent played by Rowan Atkinson.

Genre
The genre is mainly comedy but has crossovers into the action/adventure genre especially in the dream sequences. However I will focus mainly on the comedic elements.
The main character (Johnny) is shown as being incompetent while believing he is actually highly proffesional. Therefore he acts professionly while doing ridicolous things (such as throwing his coat out the window) which is funny, as people find his delusions funny. Most of the other characters around him are quite good agents and are proffesional which makes the main character seem even more ridicolous and makes the audience laugh at the other characters reactions to him.

The setting is in the fictional MI7. This would normally be an action adventure setting but the film defies conventions by setting a comedy there and making the office seem quite mundane and not top secret like its normally potrayed which also makes audiences laugh.

The Iconography is similar to the setting. The normal "cool car" "gadgets" and guns of spy films are there but all these things are useless in the hands of johnny shown when the gun falls apart when he tries to use it. This shows it is a mickey take of normal spy films.

The narrative is also comedic as Johnny makes various mistakes along his mission including failing to "get the girl" and mistaking ooffins containing dead bodies for coffins containing important items. The dialogue with Johnny saying things like "all I need is a slightly bigger brain then neccasary."

The narrative also follows Torodov's narrative rule. The equilibrium is when Johnny is merely Agent 1's secretary dreaming of becoming an agent. The disruption comes when all the agents in the country die and Johnny becomes Agent 1 himself. The restoration is when Johnny ends up solving the case and proving everyone who didn't believe him wrong.

The characters follows Propp's character rule as well. There is the hero (Johnny) who defies stereotypes by seeming incompetent for most of the film but earning the right of hero at the end where he saves Britain. There is the princess (Lorna) who also defies stereotypes by actually being a better agent then Johnny however also acting as the love interest. There is the Helper, Bob, who is Johnnys long suffering sidekick. The head agent is the wise "Princesses father" who also defies conventions by seeming wise but being wrong at the end. Finally the villian is Pascal Sauvage who tries to take over Britain and turn it into a giant prison.
